There's More Than Meets the Eye at Sun Peaks

Sure, Sun Peaks has the skiable acreage to compete with the best resorts in North America, but I was unsure if the terrain would measure up to the likes of neighboring resorts. After a few cruiser warmup laps on perfect corduroy, it was time to see what the ski resort was really made of. Turns out, there is so much more to Sun Peaks Resort than meets the eye.

Skiing at Sun Peaks

Split between three mountains, Sun Peaks boasts 144 ski trails across Mt. Tod, which holds the new West Bowl terrain, Sundance, where you’ll find the top-to-bottom terrain park and Mt. Morrissey, affectionately known as the local’s mountain. While some ski resorts keep beginners to one general area, Sun Peaks does a great job intermixing greens, blues and black diamonds for a better group skiing experience. While some of your friends may never want to venture off the beaten path, you can all take the same chair, choose your own adventure on the way down and meet back at the bottom for another lap.

This year, the West Bowl expansion is new to the Sun Peaks terrain this year, serviced by the new West Bowl Express chairlift, which tops out at 6,867 feet above sea level. What used to be a T-bar and accessed roughly 50 skiable acres is now its zone that caters to intermediate and advanced skiers. If you’re looking for a leg burner, the hike-to terrain in Gil’s offers the steepest and generally the deepest glades tree skiing on the mountain. It’s not uncommon to find natural and man-made features to jump off of and this is where you’ll continue to find soft snow days after a storm.

Getting There

Getting There

Sun Peaks is accessible via Kamloops Airport (YKA), located about 45 minutes away from the resort. Major airlines such as Air Canada and WestJet ffer direct flights to Kamloops from major Canadian cities like Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton, as well as seasonal connections from the U.S. From Kamloops, visitors can take shuttle services, such as the Sun Peaks Resort Shuttle, or rent a car for a scenic drive to the resort. Shuttle options are convenient and offer direct transfers, making the trip hassle-free. For travelers coming from further distances, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is another good option. YVR offers international and domestic flights, with a 5-hour drive to Sun Peaks

Parking at Sun Peaks is generally convenient, with several large lots available across the resort. For day visitors, parking is free in the main lots near the base of the lifts and throughout the village area. There is also ample parking near the base of chairlifts like the Morrisey Express and Sunburst Express, so skiers can easily access the slopes. However, starting in the 2021/2022 winter season, Sun Peaks introduced a designated overnight parking area in the P5 lot, which is located in the east village near the Morrisey Express chairlift. This area has been expanded to accommodate more vehicles and requires a nightly fee for overnight parkers.
