Rarely does a design overhaul alter a ski’s personality so greatly, but K2’s new vibration-damping tech has taken this new generation of Mindbenders to the next level. Managing vibrations is one of the biggest challenges in ski design. Traditionally, brands have relied on large amounts of metal to create skis that remain calm and predictable at speed. This often comes at the expense of maneuverability and weight. Previous generations of the Mindbender 96 leaned into that philosophy, pairing a stiff directional shape with a substantial Y-shaped Titanal laminate.

K2’s new construction, dubbed Dark Matter, places four compact pucks, made of metal powder and PU, above and below the binding area to absorb those pesky vibrations. The result is a ski that feels smooth and composed, without relying on the aforementioned metal laminates that have long defined the Mindbender collection.

Thankfully, the new Mindbender 96 recipe does retain some metal. A smaller Titanal sheet underfoot works alongside the pucks to recreate the planted, confidence-inspiring feel that the previous iteration was known for. The result is a ski that feels noticeably lighter and more nimble than its predecessor, without sacrificing composure at speed.

Surrounding that updated construction is a frontside-focused, directional shape with a wide shovel and tapered tail that naturally pulls the skier into clean, engaging carves. Compared to the wider and more playful Mindbender 101, the 96 feels extremely precise and eager to get on edge. It feels light on its feet and quick in transitions, making it easy to maneuver through tighter terrain. Overall, the Mindbender 96 retains the directional confidence that has defined the series for years, while introducing a level of lightweight agility
that previous generations never quite possessed.
