Defined by its new energetic core and the ever-popular artwork of Travis Parr, the Torrent 96 marks a new direction for Icelantic’s all-mountain directional lineup, replacing the long-running Pioneer series. While the Pioneer was approachable and easy to ski, it often felt caught between the damp, smooth feel of metal-laden competitors and the snappy energy of more playful carvers. The Torrent 96 breaks free of that predicament and establishes a clear identity as an engaging and energy filled ski.
At the heart of that personality is a generous amount of carbon. Icelantic lays carbon stringers down the center of the ski, alongside three inverted carbon chevrons at the start of the rocker lines in both the tip and tail. The result is a ski that feels lively and energetic, carrying great rebound between turns.
The construction is paired with a refined shape that further separates the Torrent from its predecessor. A wider shovel and tighter turn radius encourage the ski to pull aggressively into the fall line, making for quite an entertaining carving experience. Unlike directional skis with metal laminates, the Torrent remains easy to pivot and release, providing comfort in tight terrain.
The Torrent 96 is best suited for the directional resort skier who values energy and responsiveness over maximum dampness. It doesn’t offer the limitless top-end stability of heavier metal skis, but it delivers a lively, engaging ride that makes every turn feel extremely fun.
