It’s no secret that the ski industry is heavily supported by those with healthy disposable incomes and most ski towns cater to the ultra wealthy. But let it be known that us ski bums still exist and not every ski town has been gentrified with massive second homes and heated sidewalks. We’re talking about Golden, British Columbia—one of the last authentic ski towns in Canada and a hotspot for gravity-fueled, adrenaline-pumping winter recreation of any and all kinds.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort stands apart in North America for its raw, challenging terrain spread across 3,486 acres. The mountain's unique topography features four main bowls divided by ridges that funnel into a single face, creating a natural progression of skiing that builds in difficulty as you move across the resort. We recommend in Crystal Bowl, which serves as an ideal warm-up zone before tackling the mountain's more demanding terrain. From there, CPR Ridge emerges as the mountain's crown jewel, featuring legendary chutes like Tunnel Vision, Boxcar, and Spur Line on its north face. These runs are characterized by steep pitches, technical requirements, and natural features, including cliffs, spines, and wind lips, perfect for some rowdy skiing.
The resort's terrain becomes progressively more intense as you move toward areas like Whitewall and Feuz Bowl, where usually untracked zones such as 101 Last Chance and Two Trick Pony await. For those seeking the ultimate challenge, Terminator Peak, accessible via a short boot pack, offers the infamous Truth, Dare, and Consequence runs on its north face, while its south aspect presents a complex network of gullies and rocky ledges.
The recent opening of Ozone, a formerly competition-only venue used in the Freeride World Tour, also features incredible skiing. This exposed alpine face provides the kind of big-mountain skiing typically reserved for backcountry expeditions.
The resort's backcountry access is endless as well, with the Dogtooth Range of the Purcell Mountains offering immediate access to untouched bowls. Notably, areas like Super Bowl Saddle, reached by traversing to T2 and climbing Terminator Peak, often hold fresh powder.
Kicking Horse is the place to be if you are looking for technical skiing in wide open bowls, steep chutes and endless trees. This legendary mountain resort sits just outside of Golden, BC, and is surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountains in the world.
To get to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, you’ll need to fly into Calgary International Airport (YYC), which is the closest major hub, about 2.5 hours away by car. From there, you can rent a car or book a shuttle. For those who prefer not to drive, the Champagne Powder Shuttle offers daily services between Calgary Airport and Golden (where Kicking Horse is located), with a travel time of approximately 3 hours. Alternatively, there are also direct shuttle services from Golden to the resort.
Other nearby airports include Canadian Rockies International Airport (Cranbrook, BC) and Kamloops Airport, both around 2.5 hours away by car. The resort is well-connected with other transportation options, including rental cars and local shuttle services, once you're in Golden. Additionally, Kicking Horse provides easy access for travelers driving through the scenic Trans-Canada Highway. If you’re coming from Banff or Calgary, the drive offers beautiful mountain views.
Parking at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is quite convenient, with multiple lots located at the base of the mountain. Visitors can park close to the gondola or in one of the additional overflow areas if the primary lots are full. Parking is typically free, although it can be busy during peak season, especially on weekends or powder days. For those staying in Golden or other nearby areas, there are also shuttle services available to ease access to the resort.
