The scoop on the loop: How Jesper Tjäder skied the world's first loop rail

This Fall, Field Productions’ latest flick, Supervention 2, hit over 150 theaters across Norway. Two years in the making, the movie wowed audiences with its self-described “daring, innovative and fearless” techniques. We’ve highlighted one such feat, here: Jesper Tjäder’s “loop rail.”

Topping out at 2,469 m (8,100 ft) above sea level, Galdhøpiggen (below) is the highest mountain in Norway, Scandinavia and Northern Europe. Below its summit, Jesper Tjäder successfully topped out, upside down, in the first-ever “loop rail.”

The loop, as recounted by Jesper Tjäder:

“It was a relief to finally complete the loop, to say the least. It took 14 months from the time I first attempted it to the moment I finally stuck it.

We started the project in May, 2015 and wrapped up in July of ‘16. I had about 70-plus stabs at the loop, and while that may not sound like a lot, every go at it was either scary or painful. That is to say, I fell pretty hard a few times. Luckily, I suffered no significant injuries.

We started shooting in Sweden, and after many failed attempts it was clear we needed to make some changes to the construction. By the time we were ready to go, the snow had dried up, so we moved the loop to a glacier in Norway.

We made small tweaks to the loop after every session we had. Most notably, we had to keep making the entrance to the loop steeper and steeper.

After I finally got it once, it was much easier to complete the next time. I ended up nailing it a few times to get some additional angles and a GoPro viewpoint, as well. I did it perfectly two times, and almost perfectly maybe five times.

All told, shooting with Field was a pleasure. I focus on the skiing, and they make the footage look amazing.”
