There’s a strong current of electricity that comes with walking into a ski film premiere in the fall. Sure, your skis might still be sitting in the garage where you left them last spring, but for a few hours the unmistakable feeling of winter creeps closer. Friends reconnect over cold bevies and filmmakers get their moment in the spotlight as the room gets louder watching deep turns and big hits. This fall, the TREW To You tour brings that spirit to ski communities across North America, with grassroots films offering different perspectives on life in the mountains.

The best ski films don’t always come from the biggest production crews or the most recognizable names. Sometimes they come from a group of friends filming each other at their local hill, chasing storms, building booters or making the most of whatever the season throws their way. TREW To You gives those filmmakers the resources and mentorship to turn those ideas into finished films, while putting the people, places and stories behind skiing at the center of the project.

Behind the Scenes

The process starts before a camera ever rolls. Teams are selected based on applications outlining the stories they want to tell and their experience bringing those ideas to life, rather than submitting a finished film for consideration. Once selected, the crews receive startup funding; TREW gear and access to industry filmmaking professionals who help guide them through the production process.

This season, four teams spent 12 weeks filming and another 12 weeks editing their five- to seven-minute projects. Executive Producer of TREW to You, Jacob Oster, worked with each crew throughout the process, helping them develop their stories and navigate the production through final delivery.

“The passion and personality these crews bring to TREW To You is what makes this program so special,” said Jess Joyner, TREW Brand Manager. “They each have their own way of seeing skiing and telling stories. Getting to bring those perspectives together on the road is what makes the tour so exciting.”

Meet the Teams

The four teams cover plenty of ground. Butta Dawgs brings humor and adventure from the San Juan Mountains, Senderos captures the rhythms of a Southwest winter, Wildline explores the connection between skiing and artistic expression in the Adirondacks and Forecast Her looks at the responsibility that comes with making safety decisions in the mountains.

Butta Dawgs - Durango, Colorado
Butta Dawgs is a Durango crew that brings spontaneity and laughter to adventures in the San Juan Mountains. Maddie Gerritsen, Analise Gates, Brynne Mower and Nils Oaberg balance a serious appreciation for the mountains with a willingness to embrace the chaos, inside jokes and unexpected moments that come with chasing backcountry objectives.

In "Theory of Butta," Gerritsen and Gates set out to find the mythical Butta, a mysterious source of eternal fame, power and glorious steeze. Bikes, rafts, skis and plenty of grit become part of the search, with the journey turning into a bigger story about friendship, adventure and appreciating the absurdity of being a tiny human in a massive landscape.

Senderos - Santa Fe, New Mexico
Senderos explores the particular character of winter in the southwest, where desert landscapes meet snow-covered mountains and the season has a rhythm all its own. Norbu Frances, Savannah Huerta, Danny Ebenstein, Jackson Buscher and Zach Hagy follow their winter from resort laps to backcountry missions, finding plenty of reasons to get after it along the way.

The film carries the same name and focuses on the experience of riding with friends and making the most of whatever conditions the season provides. Rather than chasing one defining objective, the crew embraces the quieter days, unexpected turns and shared experiences that make a southwest winter so unique.

Wildline - Lake Placid, New York
For the Wildline crew, the Adirondacks are both home and a source of creative inspiration. Noah Ball, Josey Brady and Connor Brady are accustomed to working for their objectives, whether that means a long approach to an ephemeral ski line or the time and effort required to bring an idea to life on film.

"Scribble" follows east coast skier and artist Noah Ball as he searches the Adirondacks for inspiration in both his skiing and his art. Directed and produced by Josey and Connor Brady, the film explores the relationship between creative expression and skiing, along with the challenge of letting an idea evolve instead of forcing it into a predetermined shape.

Forecast Her - Vail, Colorado
Forecast Her brings together Chrissie Oken, Heather Bayer, Cheyenne Smith, Alex Brady and Joe Pohl for a film that looks beyond the usual pursuit of bigger lines and deeper snow. The Vail-based crew follows Oken, a Vail ski patroller, High Altitude Search and Rescue member and avalanche professional whose work involves making safety decisions in an environment she cannot control.

"Forecast Her" considers how Oken’s responsibility extends beyond the mountain and into everyday life, offering a look at the less visible side of working in high-consequence mountain environments. Heather Bayer directed the film, with Cheyenne Smith producing, Alex Brady filming and Joe Pohl editing.

More Than a Film Screening

The TREW To You events allow you to watch the films, celebrate the teams and get fired up for winter. Screenings will take place at theaters, shops, breweries and other venues, bringing filmmakers and local ski communities together for a night built around the stories and people that make each location special in their own way.

Each tour stop also has a nonprofit beneficiary, with proceeds donated to local snowsports organizations and other nonprofits. Last year's tour raised $10,000 for groups connected to the communities that hosted screenings.

The audience will have a voice in choosing the Season Four winner alongside a panel of industry professionals. The judges will also provide feedback to the filmmakers, extending the mentorship aspect of the project beyond the production process and giving the crews an opportunity to learn from others working in the industry.

The winning team will receive $15,000 toward a feature-length film next year, continuing the cycle of support that sits at the heart of TREW To You.

A Look Back at Season Three

Season Four's tour will also feature "Past Due," the feature-length from last year's winning team, Pirates of the Carabiner. The Lake Placid crew received the $15,000 TREW To You filmmaking grant after Season Three and used the support to develop the new project, giving this year's audience a chance to see what can come from the program beyond its initial short film.

The addition gives the tour a connection between seasons while showing the longer-term opportunity TREW To You creates for its filmmakers. The program gives a winning crew the resources to continue developing work after the initial competition is over.

Tour Schedule

The TREW To You Film Tour rolls through the fall with stops in the Pacific Northwest, the Rockies, the Southwest and the Northeast. Each event is an opportunity to see the finished films, celebrate the crews behind them and kick off the season with a room full of skiers, filmmakers and friends.
