Finland, a Northern European country bordered by Norway and Sweden, and the proud home to some of the weirdest sporting competitions in the world. There’s the World Wife Carrying Championships , the Hobbyhorsing World Championships and, now, there’s a swamp skiing race. In a dress. And high heels.
Spearheaded by artist Kari Tykkyläinen, the race is a celebration of the Finnish identity: madness, eroticism and sisu–or perseverance. Competitors are required to race across a swamp in nordic skis while wearing a dress, high heels and a wig. It’s not the best skiing you’ll see today but I can assure you it’ll be the weirdest you see in a while.
