Beartooth Basin is a summer ski area all its own. While it may not have a single chairlift—only two Pomas—Beartooth Basin is one of the gnarliest ski areas anywhere, no matter the season. Right off the top of Beartooth Pass, which connects Yellowstone National Park's northeast entrance in Wyoming to Red Lodge in Montana, the ski area offers massive cornices, steep pitches and plenty of cliffs to launch off of for a rowdy day of big-mountain skiing.

The Twin Lakes headwall is the center of it all, complete with an optional massive cornice drop at the top and sprinkled with natural features throughout the 600 acres of skiable terrain. Beartooth Basin is steep—up to 50 degrees in some places—and it is full of natural hazards. The ski area's website recommends intermediate to advanced skills for a good time.

Although the ski area sits at 10,900 feet above sea level, climate change has complicated Beartooth's summer ski operations in recent years, making this year's opening that much more special. The ski area has officially announced that lift tickets for May 27-June 10 are now on sale, even though an exact opening date has not been announced.

You can either purchase a season pass for $395, if you plan on sticking around for the entire operating season, or you can purchase by the day for $50/day. On social media and on the website, Beartooth Basin has estimated an opening date around May 25, give or take a couple of days, but that is still to be announced. Regardless, it's time to pack up your camping rig and ski gear and hit the Beartooth Highway.
