Last year, Rossignol brought the soul back to its freeride line, including the Rallybird series, and this year, it remains unchanged. The former Rallybird line was an ultra-aggressive ski that was quick to throw skiers in the backseat. Rossignol recognized the need to make it more accessible, much like the lamented Soul 7, so the brand reintroduced the ski as Rallybird Soul 102. Lighter, softer and more approachable than the original bird, the Rallybird Soul 102 rocks the honeycomb Air Tip that became synonymous with the Soul series while maintaining the prowess of its predecessor for laying down an impressive arc. Consider this a goldilocks-like balance between the two very different lines of skis.
With that in mind, we took the Rallybird Soul 102 for a rip, and the consensus is that it hits the mark for a directional all-mountain ski. On groomers, the ski intuitively rolls over on edge and holds steady at speed.Â
Off piste, the Rallybird’s progressive flex responds well on variable terrain. Underfoot, the ski is reinforced with a layer of Titanal that covers the width of the ski but only the length of the binding plate, creating a progressively softer flex as you get to the tip and tail. This makes the ski more forgiving in bumps, but when you get into icy, scraped-off sections and exceptional crud, the ski folds a bit more than the original iteration. If you liked the lightweight versatility of the Soul 7 but need a ski with more backbone, this is it! For the girls who left the race gates behind but still love to lay down a fast, clean arc on groomers, the Rallybird Soul 102 sings across the entire resort.
