If you've been monitoring freeskiing with a magnifying glass over the last few years, you know Nikolai Schirmer. On the other hand, if you've barely looked at ski media, there's still a chance you know who Schirmer is. That's the beauty of this Norwegian freeride phenom. His irreplicable combination of storytelling, ski prowess and candid approachability has made him one of the most famous skiers on earth, and his latest videos are a testament to his craft.
Schirmer has been on an incredible run lately, dropping nine short videos and two feature films over the last two months. Not that numbers mean everything, but his YouTube channel has just under 200,000 subscribers, and his growth doesn't seem to be slowing any time soon.
The nine short projects chronicle his voyages into the high peaks of the Lyngen Alps with various friends and professional skiers and snowboarders. (We hesitate to call them "short projects," as each one is incredibly detailed and could be considered films by most standards.) These include treks to legendary peaks, harrowing couloirs, and missions with Cody Townsend and Elyse Saugsted.
"Chacha Land" chronicles an intense trip to Georgia last season with fellow blackcrows athletes Sam Favret and Lucas Wachs. The trio found a variety of conditions, starting with incredible pow and ending with cripple avalanche danger. But to say they made the most out of it would be an understatement.
"SKI" is the crown jewel of Schirmer's career thus far. The full-length movie was filmed and distributed over the last few years, though it just made its way to YouTube. The film dives into a ski mission like none other. We highly recommend dedicating an evening to this feature.
