ZEAL Optics currently produces all their sunglass frames with a plant-based material called Z-resin that is derived from castor beans. On Thursday, they announced that they are taking their environmental initiatives a step further with the introduction of world’s first bio-based sunglass lens, dubbed “e-llume.” The lens uses castor oil as the basis for a bonding agent that replaces the traditional petroleum-based bonder for a more environmentally friendly product that maintains great lens clarity.
The lenses offer protection from all UV rays in addition to HEV (High Energy Visible) light and are hard-coated for scratch resistance. Dark Grey and Copper will be the first editions of the polarized lens and will be offered in the Kennedy and Tofino frames for $139 starting May 1st. Following that, the lenses will end up in every frame and new colorways will be introduced.
