The iconic rock band The Foo Fighters recently caught wind of street skiing as they have made a new music video with the Buldoz Crew. The music video is for Foo Fighters' new song "Of All People" which was released a week ago.
Buldoz Crew is a group of Swiss skiers who are known for their street skiing and the infamous Buldoz Invitational, but here’s the catch: there’s no snow involved. Buldoz Crew quickly built a YouTube following for their creative and extreme street-skiing videos, in which they often aren't even skiing on snow. The group has 19.1k subscribers on YouTube. If you haven't already seen their videos, you'll most likely catch them straighlining down a dam into a lake, hitting a side hit off of a log on a dirt trail, or making sparks fly off their skis while sending it down a staircase.
How'd this happen?
Ironically enough, the director of the music video, Alex Acy, found one of Buldoz Crew's videos a year ago and said in an interview with Blabbermouth that he “had to meet them.” Acy later introduced the band members to Buldoz Crew's videos. Dave Grohl, the frontman for Foo Fighters, said in an interview with Blabbermouth, “Just when I thought I'd seen it all, I discovered BPC and snowless skiing. It's either the gnarliest extreme sport I've ever seen, the most fun anyone can have before a guaranteed trip to the hospital, or both. It's an honor to be the soundtrack to this madness."
Madness or even just complete insanity is one way to explain what these skiers do. But they sure do still pull off these stunts with style. I mean, that is what freestyle, and especially street skiing, is all about, right? Mixing insane life-threatening tricks with charisma and creativity.Â
The music video stars skiers Flaco, Blasco Paterno Castello, Mael Bovey, Jordy, Andrea de Angelis and Keti Vasadze. Buckle up: in the video, you’ll see the group skiing down streets, stairs, drains, and grass, breaking fingers and even getting taken into an ambulance.Â
Why street?
Street skiing began in the late 90s to early 2000s, when twin-tip skis were becoming more popular, as a rebellious movement away from the rigid structure of freestyle competitions. The freedom of not being in competition while still incorporating freestyle tricks created a new creative genre in skiing, which has now boomed.
Some famous freestyle comp athletes have been dedicated enough to stack clips in the streets while putting up big numbers on the competition circuit. Look no further than Alex Hall and Hunter Hess, the founding skiers behind MAGMA. These two have spent years juggling schedules that take them around the globe and landing on plenty of FIS World Cup podiums, all while still putting out mind-melting parts.
But Buldoz is taking that street skiing to a new extreme by skiing in untamed environments with no snow. Stupidity? You could definitely call it that, but you have to give these guys credit for even having the guts to pull off tricks in no snow. Candide Thovex is the king of snowless skiing and has made multiple iconic cuts of himself ripping everything from tropical jungles to desert spines. You've probably seen bits and pieces of the legendary "Ski The World" video, which currently sits at a humble 6.9 million views on YouTube.Â
Who knows, we might be seeing a lot more freeskiing in music videos after this one, because I will say, it works. What better way to show off creativity than by partnering with an iconic band like the Foo Fighters or vice versa with some gnarly skiers?Â
