Pipe Semifinal & Sandy Pants Rail Jam Rock Aspen Snowmass Open

Twas a glorious Saturday here in Aspen. The sun was back out in full force, and the vibes were running high all day long.

The first event on the docket was the Superpipe semifinal. Two heats of 20+ riders took to the stunt ditch. The athletes took advantage of the great weather and the epic pipe, and laid down some serious runs. All morning long, the spectators gathered at the bottom of the pipe were treated to massive airs, wild flipping, crazy spinning, and switch-tricking action. What was perhaps most impressive today was the level of talent seen from the 13-14 year old competitors. Good going, amigos!

Twenty athletes advanced to tomorrow's Superpipe finals. Based on what I saw today, and knowing that riders will likely up the ante in the final round, tomorrow is prepped to be one heck of a show.

When the pipe event concluded, everybody made their way down the hill to the backside of Bumps Lodge for the first ever Sandy Pants Rail Jam. More than forty five tons of sand from Costa Rica was placed outside of the lodge, and was shaped into a work of art by sand sculptors from all over the country.

Skiers and riders hit rails and boxes constructed around the giant sculpture, and some competitors even hit the sand for some of their tricks. And as per usual at a rail jam setting, the metal was absolutely slayed.

The sand sculpture looked quite nice, before the riders absolutely demolished it.
