It's been a bountiful winter in South America... and that might be an understatement. The Andes have experienced stupendous snowfall courtesy of an El Niño pattern that settled in months ago. Chile's Valle Nevado Resort alone has received over 17 feet of snow this year, enabling it to extend operations through October 18.
By the end of July, much of the high reaches of Argentina and Chile were blanketed with more snow than they saw all last year. Valle Nevado had opened nearly all of its skiable terrain by that time. Riders like Adrià Mila have already checked off bucket list spines that usually aren't skiable until September.
Consistent snowfall and temperatures have left the region with a stable snowpack going into the latter half of winter, and there's no shortage of excitement. "We are experiencing a remarkable season, and the snow and slope conditions are exceptional," said Dominique Rudloff, General Manager of Valle Nevado. "With great snow, longer spring days, and 121 days of skiing, this is a season we won't soon forget."
With many of Valle Nevado's lodges open through late September, now is the time to send South. To add fuel to the fire, OpenSnow is calling for upwards of 45 inches over the next 10 days. With over a month and a half left of lift-serviced access, there's plenty of skiing left to be had in the Andes.
