With horrendous avalanche conditions plaguing Georgia's Caucasus Mountains, the Freeride World Tour organizers decided to cancel the competition. The good news? Stop Three has officially been moved to Kühtai - Innsbruck, Austria, as announced by the Tour on February 24.
"Following the cancellation of the Georgia Pro due to unstable snowpack conditions, the FIS Freeride World Tour by Peak Performance has identified a solution that allows the competition to take place," the official press release read.
"The Georgia Pro will now be restaged in Kühtai – Innsbruck, Austria. Schöffi’s Face in Kühtai provides the terrain, conditions, and operational framework needed to host the event in accordance with FWT safety standards. Restaging the competition ensures that athletes retain the opportunity to compete for the points originally allocated to the Georgia Pro."
The Tour has been very vocal about the fact that this change is for this season only, and that they have every intention of returning the Georgia Pro to its home country next winter. Currently, the team is targeting February 26 and 27 as the competition window for Innsbruck.
It takes courage to make a move like this. While it might seem outrageously sensible, it is extremely costly and time-consuming to restage the event like this. We highly commend the FWT organizers for placing athlete safety above all else!
