It's been a busy summer at Sugarloaf. With a can of Moxie in hand, the resort opened Maine's newest bike park on July 4, 2025, to glowing reviews after four years of hard work and preparation. Sugarloaf's golf course is also celebrating 40 years of operations as one of the best public courses in the country, with an official ceremony taking place on this upcoming September 12-14.

But while Sugarloaf takes great pride in their summer ops, winter is always at the front of mind. This is especially true now, as the beloved ski area prepares for its 75th anniversary season.

Ahead of the big year, Vice President of Mountain Operations, Brent Larson, announced several upgrades to mountain infrastructure. "Ever since we opened the lift-served mountain biking park, the stoke has been high," said Larson. "At the same time, we’ve made significant improvements to snowmaking and lift infrastructure that will make an immediate impact this winter."

The SuperQuad chairlift, one of Sugarloaf's most popular and centralized lifts, received a full haul rope replacement for its 31st winter. Completing this upgrade in the summer ensures that the lift will be ready to roll come fall. But the majority of the improvements mentioned by Larson focus on increasing the ski area's snowmaking capacities.

Crews completed a three-year-long project to upgrade the mountain’s main water line from 14 inches to 20 inches, dramatically increasing snowmaking abilities. Additionally, Sugarloaf redeployed pipe on Spillway XCut and Gin Pole, installed new tower guns on West Mountain and Spurline, and implemented a fourth booster pump to increase speed.

Eliminating waste and increasing efficiency is the name of the game, especially out East, where cold temps and minimal precipitation can lead to difficult early-season conditions at resorts with poor snowmaking.

Sugarloaf has not announced an anticipated 2025 opening day. Both the Golf Club and the Bike Park will remain open through October 19, with the Bike Park capping off the season with a celebratory closing weekend.
