The new era of X Games continues to unfold, with the first-ever Moonpay X Games League (XGL) winter season draft taking place on September 16, 2026, in Los Angeles, California. The four X Games Clubs (XC), Park City, Whistler, Golden State and New York, went pick-for-pick, building their rosters with 40 of the best skiers and boarders around.

It was a spectacle the likes of which freeskiing has never seen before, as the event overflowed with all the pomp and circumstance you'd expect from the NFL draft. But to see it in the world of snow sports was a new sight altogether.

Red Bull and Monster hats packed the venue. More than 500 guests poured in throughout the night. We saw red carpet walks, paparazzi photo routines and some true L.A. stars making the rounds. But don't let all the glitz and glam skew the fact that some of the best skiers on planet Earth were in the house, ready to take part in the 2027 XGL winter season .

To nobody's surprise, Eileen Gu went first overall, being selected by XC Golden State. Club manager Jonny Mosely enthusiastically opened up the evening with the pick, setting the tone for the night. The rest of the first round, which included two picks from each club, was divided between skiers and boarders. Megan Oldham and Mac Forehand went back-to-back after being selected by XC Whistler with the fourth and fifth picks, respectively. Closing out the round, Luca Harrington was chosen by XC Golden State with the eighth pick.

"Tonight, we added something entirely new [to X Games]: consequences across a season," said Jeremy Bloom, CEO of X Games. "Four teams just drafted the best ski and snowboard athletes in the world, and now every result in Aspen, Canada and Finland will matter toward one championship. We’re taking a brand people have loved for decades and giving fans something they’ve never had before, teams to follow, a season to track and a championship to fight for."

There were certainly a few surprises throughout the draft. Skiing's favorite tall guy and 15-time X Games medalist, Alex Hall, wasn't selected until the 28th pick in round four, when he was scooped up by XC Park City, his hometown club. Additionally, Kelly Sildaru didn't go until the 38th pick in round five. The 10-time X Games medalist and the second-most decorated female skier in X Games history.

Obviously, these skiers were being drafted against insane competition from the snowboard world, like the legendary Mark McMorris reeling in an astounding 25 X Games medals over his 20 X Games appearances. But a few of these oddly late picks raise the question of involvement. Have each of these athletes committed to all three 2027 XGL winter stops in Aspen, Calgary and Ruka, or are some balancing World Cup commitments that might interfere?

It's unlikely that any of these 40 skiers and boarders won't prioritize XGL events, if for no other reason besides the $500,000 winning team cash prize purse. Still, between The Snow League for halfpipe riders, World Cup competitions, X Games League and finding time to stack clips (for those who do), competitive freeskiers now have more options than ever before when it comes to making a living on two sticks.

And while the X Games rebrand has been met with an inquisitive eye from some, the shift does bring more eyes, cash prizes and potential sponsor money to our favorite skiers. That's a plus. We'll be watching closeley this year at this first-ever XGL winter season kicks off, stopping in Aspen, Colorado, 1/29-1/31, Calgary, Canada, 2/19-2/21, and Ruka, Finland, 4/9-4/11, 2027.
